Surface/Jewellery - Metallic fabric
Project runs from Monday 15 September 2014 - Friday 3 October 2014
Learning Outcomes:
- To experience design and making in another field
- To make a wearable design
- To combine jewellery and surface design
- Learning new techniques:
- tool making
- crochet
- wire drawing
- jump rings
- chain mail
Program:
The program runs over three weeks:
- In week one we explore new techniques and experiment with materials
- tool making with brass rods
- crocheting with cotton/wool/linen yarn
- Jump rings and the manipulation of thin wire.
16th – 18th September
- Week two designing of a wearable design which emerges from your exploration and experimentation of the material and techniques
22nd and 23rd September
- In week three the final design is made.
29th September – 3rd October.

Brief:
You will be divided into groups of two or three. The idea is to mentor expertise and pass on your experience to the other. Surface students will mentor jewellery students in their fields of expertise and vice versa. Make a wearable design using woven wire, chainmail and crocheted yarn. The item can be attached to any part of the body and needs to be functionally wearable. The piece needs to be completed within the time frame, so plan and manage your project accordingly.
Task:
Make a wearable design using brass chain mail and fabre based crochet. Document all your preparatory work, designing, prototyping and reflection in a visual diary/web page [blog].
Materials:
Brass rods, brass wire and fibre yarn [both natural and/or synthetic]
Assessment Criteria:
What is the level of exploration and experimentation with the techniques and materials?
- crocheting
- chain mail
What is the level of design competence
- understanding of the materials and techniques
- innovation
- how much research has been made and absorbed into the designing
- library references
- internet
What is the level of finish
- neatness and care
Lecturers: Mark, Verna and John
